Why did my post fail?
Updated over a week ago

Receiving an error that your content failed to post can be frustrating.

While this should happen rarely, we want to make sure you're able to schedule posts, without worry. Below we'll share some tips to ensure your posts are successfully posted and if not, what you can do if one fails.

A post inside an 𝕏 thread fails

If one of the posts inside your thread fails, the entire thread will fail.

We will let you know which one it is so you will be able to repost, and we'll automatically take care for you of deleting the already published posts immediately so you can safely re-publish your entire thread.

Videos

When it comes to uploading videos to X - even directly from the site itself - it can be that an error occurs and uploads get stuck or fail to publish. As such, if you do post a lot of videos, you may experience a failure from time to time. This is out of Typefully's control but we do have some tips that should reduce the chances of this happening.

Video Failed to Process or Upload

If the video is unsuccessful, you will get a different message based on where you've uploaded the video.

If you've tried to upload it directly to X and it gets stuck:

If you upload via Typefully and the same error occurs:

It failed, what you can do about it?

These problems tend to happen with certain formats/codecs more often than others.

Therefore we stress that you should try to be consistent in your export settings when you make videos for X. For example, always using the same file type and same dimensions.

Here are some things to try:

  • Repost the video on Typefully. Problems on X's video pipeline are usually temporary and the same video should be able to post at a later time.

  • Replace the video file. If publishing continues to fail, this is the preferred method. Certain videos may cause X's video upload pipeline to crash completely which means your video is stuck at "99% processing". Re-export your video file with different settings and try again.

  • Use a shorter or smaller video size. You can compress videos with QuickTime or iMovie on Mac or with an online tool like Veed. Smaller videos tend to create fewer problems as they upload more quickly.

  • Use a GIF instead of a video. There are free tools that create high quality GIFs from your videos β€” our favorite is Gifski for Mac. We know this isn't always ideal, but if your video is short anyway, it could be a nice alternative. Since X compresses videos anyway, a GIF could even turn out better.

  • Post directly on X.com: This should be used a last resort but it can help if your video is longer than the 2:20 seconds allowed by third-party apps like Typefully (Supported Media Formats), or if the X API is having issues.

Image failed to post

It may be that your image has not posted. This could be because the format you used is not supported, the file is too big or the dimensions are too big or small. In this case, we recommend resizing based on the following:

  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WEBP

  • Image size <= 5 MB

  • Dimension: 4096 x 4096

A post @mentions a suspended account

In case your post @mentions a user who is temporarily suspended, the tweet will fail.

In this case you will need to remove the @mention to that user and re-post. This is because X blocks this. In case you are unsure of whether an account is blocked, you can always go to that user's account on X. If suspended, you'll see a message that looks like this:
